Win The Therapeion Derby!
It’s time for the Therapeion Derby!
We all know about the regular Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing — the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes.
This year, COVID-19 turned all that upside down and sideways, with the Kentucky Derby being September 5th and the Preakness moving to October 3rd. (The Belmont Stakes was already run on June 20th.)
Therapeion’s horses wanted to get into the spirit of the season, but none of them is really in shape for a traditional race -- they work hard to be the patient, well-behaved steeds our clients depend on for classes. Thus, they aren't really practiced at speed, and none of them are thoroughbreds (but don't tell them that). So, we’re enlisting your aid for the next best thing.
We’re going to let you — our extended Therapeion family — take the horses on a special race. Your mission is to get in the race to raise money for a Therapeion horse. The team that raises the most donations between the time of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness wins! What's more, Therapeion wins too! Each horse costs about $465 a month to feed, stable, and maintain, and the funds raised will go directly to helping maintain the horses.
Prizes will include gift certificates for tuition usable any time between now and the end of the riding season in 2021, merchandise from the Therapeion Zazzle store, and possibly gift certificates from some local merchants. We will do our best to be sure everyone whose horse “crosses the finish line” (see below) gets some prize, such as a 2021 Therapeion full-color calendar. We'll also list the winners here on the website for the rest of the year.
As of now, the planned major prizes include:
Win (1st place): A gift certificate for each family on the winning team redeemable for 12 classes (a $480 value).
Place (2nd place): A gift certificate for each family on the winning team redeemable for 8 classes (a $320 value).
Show (3rd place): A gift certificate for each family on the winning team redeemable for 4 classes (a $160 value).
How to Race
Here are the official procedures to enter:
Families of riders should pick 3 of Therapeion’s horses, in order of preference, that they would be willing to “race.” (The horses are shown in the gallery below.)
Fill out the entry form on this page, displayed below the gallery of horses and submit it by noon, September 1.
Therapeion staff will distribute entrants to the horses, trying our best to accommodate your preferences for horse, and possibly combining families on a team. We'll keep the teams balanced in size so there is no big advantage -- every horse will have about the same number of jockeys.
Some Therapeion volunteers may be added to each racing team, should they wish to participate
On September 5, each team will be given a unique URL at GoFundMe Charity for their team — and the race starts!
Each team then gets people to make donations to Therapeion’s “Race and Win!” campaign via their given URL. Team totals will be automatically calculated and posted on a leaderboard up until the final few days.
Teams can collect donations off-line for their horse. There will be a way to add those in to the posted totals.
The “race” ends at 6pm on October 1st. Total amounts collected to that point will determine the win-place-show ranking.
Any off-line contributions must be received by the Therapeion treasurer by 6pm Oct 3 or they will be subtracted from the final totals. This will affect win-place-show-ranking.
Any team found to be be misrepresenting themselves, other teams, or Therapeion, or behaving in a manner that is judged to be unsportsmanlike, will be disqualified.
Each team must raise a minimum amount for its horse to “cross the finish line.” This amount will be determined by September 1st, and will be between $1500 and $2500 dollars, depending on the number and sizes of teams.
The decision of the judges (selected by the Therapeion Board of Directors) is final and will be announced the evening of October 3.
Everyone should have fun with this!
