"Wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilization we will find the hoofprint of the horse beside it."
  ~John Moore

Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Center would not be able to provide its services without the help of our wonderful volunteers. Our volunteer mentors are an integral part of the Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Center programs. As a Therapeion volunteer you will receive training in safety, horse handling and grooming, and the skills needed to work with our very special participants. We appreciate any and all help, no matter how many hours or what type.

Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and ages. Many have little personal experience with horses or people with disabilities. Some are teenagers who are earning service hours. Others are retired teachers, health care workers or business people looking to give back. And some are lifelong horse people who feel the calling to help people understand how the bond between a horse and a human can change a life.

While many of our volunteers have experience with horses or working with people with special needs, it is by no means a requirement. All of our volunteers, no matter their experience, attend an orientation to familiarize themselves with our safety and operational procedures.   After completing your training new volunteers are partnered with experienced volunteers for their first few classes to help them become more comfortable before working independently.

We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities, including:
-Side-walking with the rider during riding classes to provide emotional and physical support
    -Horse handling for riding classes
    -Helping with daily stable jobs
-Organizing or volunteering to help with special or fundraising events
-Serving on one of our many committees
    -Helping with classroom activities
    -Volunteering during summer horse camps
-Volunteering in our Tack & Feed shop

We ask that our volunteers:
-Be at least 14 years of age
    -Have no criminal record

Arena volunteers must:
-Attend all appropriate volunteer training classes
-Be able to work independently without close supervision
-Be able to walk a minimum of 50 minutes
-Be able to lift over their heads for side walkers
-Be tolerate varying temperatures and the dusty barn environment

There is no way to describe the rewards you will receive as a therapeutic riding volunteer mentor.
