Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Center
"Fascination with horses predated every other single thing I knew. Before I was a mother, before I was a writer, before I knew the facts of life, before I was a schoolgirl, before I learned to read, I wanted a horse”
― Jane Smiley
Therapeion offers internship opportunities throughout the year. Internships are available for those interested in learning more about working with people with disabilities, animals, and the equine-assisted activities and therapies field. All internships include horse care and herd management components. Follow the steps below to see if an internship with us will be a good fit for you:
Contact Therapeion via e-mail or phone to set an appointment to meet with our Director, Libby Marks-Shepard. She is a PATH Intl certified mentor.
When you meet you will discuss your expectations and narrow down your areas of interest to your primary learning goal.
If you decide to pursue an internship you will be asked to submit a short application. Internships are approved by Therapeion's Board of Directors at the recommendation of the Director.
Your internship begins at the start of the class session and all projects must be completed by the end of the eight week class session.
Spring and Summer interns must volunteer for at least one hour per week during riding classes. The internship runs the length of the eight week session. A minimum commitment of 10 hours per week is required. Some hours may be done from home.
Summer interns are responsible for making Therapeion's Summer Horse Camps their own. They are responsible for developing and running two day camps with assistance from Therapeion's Director. A minimum commitment of 20 hours per week is required. At least 15 hours per week must be completed at the center.
Past interns have focused on horse health care, herd management, marketing, classroom programming, program development and design, how to become an instructor, and more. At Therapeion it is our desire that your internship is both emotionally rewarding and educational.
This is an unpaid internship and housing is not available on site. You will have access to a computer and printer with internet access.
If you think this will work for you let us know so we can begin the application process. Questions? Give us a call!
